How to Calculate Discount Percentage

  1. Subtract the sale price from the original price to find the discount amount.
  2. Divide the discount amount by the original price.
  3. Multiply the result by 100.

Example: Original = $100, Sale = $75. Discount amount = 100 − 75 = $25. Discount percentage = 25 ÷ 100 × 100 = 25%.

Discount Percentage Formula

Discount Percentage = ((Original Price − Sale Price) ÷ Original Price) × 100

Example

Original = $200, Sale = $150. Discount amount = 200 − 150 = $50. Discount percentage = 50 ÷ 200 × 100 = 25%.

Discount Amount vs Discount Percentage

The discount amount is the actual currency value saved — $50 in the example above. The discount percentage expresses that same saving relative to the original price — 25% in this case. If you already know the discount percentage and want to find the resulting dollar amount and final price, use the instead.

Percentage Discount vs Sale Price

Discount percentage represents the size of the reduction relative to the original price. Sale price is the actual final amount paid after that reduction is applied. Two items with the same discount percentage can still have very different sale prices if their original prices differ.
